Tips for Choosing a Billiards Pool Cue

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

Finding the perfect billiards cue (or cues) might seem an impossible task when faced with the number of options.  Cues can be one or two piece, have simple or ornate styles, and also have a wide range of prices.  Breaking cues down into general categories will lead you to the perfect cue.

One piece cues are also called house cues.  These pool cue sticks are intended to be used in one place, like a home game room.  Most people purchase a few cues in different lengths and weights for all types of players.  Excalibur pool cues make an excellent full sized house cue that has a classic design.  Troubleshooters have shorter length cues to get the kids playing as well.    Think about a pool cue wall rack to display and protect your house cues.

When most people think of a choosing a high quality billiards pool cue, they think of the two piece cue.  Two piece cues can be taken apart and packed in a cue case.  Choosing a pool cue of the two piece variety is easiest when you start with your price range.

At the mid to top range are Predator pool cues.  Predator cues are consistently in the top of pool cue ratings.  If a Predator cue is out of your current price range, consider a Poison cue.  Poison cues are made by Predator and have the same play and quality at a lower price.  Players cues are at the lower end of the price range, but play well and have a loyal following.  If you like the look of a house cue and the convenience of a two-piece, go for a Sneaky Pete pool cue.

Specialty cues like break cues and jump cues round out a billiards player’s arsenal.  These cues give you extra power when you need it.

Choosing a pool cue can be easy.  And don’t forget to pickup a high quality pool cue case to protect your stick!

Predator Pool Cue

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

For the most solid feeling shot around, try a Predator Pool Cue.  Their patented C4 core technology sets this manufacturer apart from the rest.  These cues are also unique for their Uni-Loc joint system and Leather-Luxe wrap.  With all of these advancements, you will become a predator in the pool hall.

With the C4 core, four wedge pieces make up the core of the shaft to increase its stability. This eliminates negative vibration for a smooth, more accurate shot.  You will feel like you are playing with a one piece cue due to the tight fitting Uni-Loc joint. This is a one-turn-on, one-turn-off system.  And in those intense games, you won’t feel any moisture on your Leather-Luxe wrap. This 3-layer system pulls sweat into the inner layer and releases it protecting your cue and your grip.

Some of the most popular Predator cues are the Ikon Series and Sneaky Pete’s Pool Cues.  Don’t forget a Predator Break Cue with special 10-piece splicing construction to eliminate negative feedback on those hard-hit shots.  Protect both your playing and break cues with a Predator Cue Case.

Is the Predator BK2 Break Cue Shaft The Best?

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

In any game of billiards, the most important shot is your first.  The break shot can determine whether or not you get to continue your turn and have the upper hand. Due to the increased force behind this shot, it can cause severe wear and tear on your playing cue.  It is a good idea to have a designated break cue. The Predator BK2 break shaft can improve your break shot and save your playing cue at the same time.

When searching for a great break shaft, you should concentrate most on the quality of the tip and ferrule.  The BK2 shaft has a well designed ferrule and hard tip that can withstand the heavy force used in a break shot.  The tip is 12.75 mm in diameter and made of phenolic and carbon fiber, so it is very sturdy.  In combination, this tip and ferrule work together to give you the maximum amount of cue ball speed.

A special splicing technique is used in the production of this shaft.  Ten wooden wedge pieces are combined to make the core. This process eliminates inconsistencies in wood grains. This solid make up eliminates negative vibrations. Your shot with a Predator shaft is so solid that you can hear the difference.  When you make that perfect contact with the cue ball, you will know by the solid “thunk” sound.

Another great feature of this shaft is Predator’s patented Quick Release Uni-Loc joint system.  This is a “one-turn-on, one-turn-off” joint system that provides a very precise fit.   This solid joint technology gives you the feel of playing with a one piece cue.

Predator has adjusted the pivot point on the BK2 shaft to give you the maximum amount of acceleration and forgiveness.  If you have a strong break shot, you likely choose to bridge at 13 to 14 in. for the most powerful break.  Unfortunately the pivot points of most break cues are between 9 to 11 inches. To solve this discrepancy, Predator has placed the BK2 shaft pivot point between 13 to 14 inches.
